This is actually the second version of my sandbox. I came up with the plans by looking at different options out there. The first one I made was just as wide as it was long and the seats didn’t have anything but sand under them. I quickly discovered that that area under the seats was taking in a lot of sand that wasn’t used, except by spiders, leaves, and other junk. My kids never explored under that spot.
I love that the seats easily fold down to keep out any animals that want to use a sand box for anything other than playing. The planks underneath the seat are also removable for storing sand toys, but as you can see from the picture below, we don’t keep them under there. There are still things about it that I would like to change or complete–for example, it still needs to be sealed to protect it from bad weather. I haven’t decided if I want to just paint it or use a varnish.
I did order a giant shade umbrella to help with burning sun of Nevada–especially for my sweet fair-skinned redhead. The problem with the beach umbrella is that the winds of Northern Nevada strong and constant. The umbrella is always blowing around and knocking on the grown-ups heads. I think I would probably like to try having posts on the corners of the box that extend to a canvas-style shade covering.
I’m not too worried about those extra things because my wife and kids completely love having a sandbox. They couldn’t even wait for me to finish it before coming out and playing in it.
